Selecting the right cleaning service is serious business. You are inviting a company to send their staff into your home to clean, so there are several things to consider except just the price.
Possibly the best way to find a service is from word of mouth, neighbor and friends recommendations, but even then you should do your own research.
When you call a cleaning service for a regular service and ask for an estimate the service should come out to meet with you to do a personal estimate. An estimate over the phone does not fully understand your personal requirements and is really just a price!
Be clear about your cleaning needs
When you meet with the company representative make sure you are clear what you are looking for that is over and above their normal routine. Let them know if you have a special way you would like your floors cleaned or if you want certain products used. If you have antiques be sure to question how they would be cleaned. Understand what the cleaning service will and won’t do.
The staff is the heart and souls of a business. Ask about the staff, staff turnover, training, type of people employed, background checks. Ask how the company treats the staff with reference to accidental damage or breakages. A happy, well paid and respected staff will give better service.

- How many staff does the company employ?
- How are employees compensated, am I responsible for taxes and social security?
- Is the staff insured through workers compensation for any injuries sustained whilst cleaning my home?
- Is the staff bonded?
- What happens if something gets damaged in my home?
- Do I need to be home when the cleaning staff comes?
- Do you provide your own cleaning supplies and tools? Can they use my supplies?
- If I need to cancel the appointment, what happens?
- What if I need extra work done, can I let you know?
- Do I have to sign a contract?
- What if I am unhappy with the work, what can I do?
By asking the right questions you should get a good picture of how the cleaning service works. Meeting someone from the company means you have a face to a name and someone to talk to if you should ever need to.
