Cleaning With Vinegar
Along with baking soda, vinegar is one of the must have cleaning products in any home that is starting to use the old fashioned green cleaning products. What makes vinegar such a versatile and great cleaner around the home? First, let me say that when I am taking about vinegar for cleaning, I am talking about distilled white vinegar. The high level of acidity in vinegar makes it a natural germ killer. Vinegar is a great solution for killing mold, bacteria and germs in general. It is inexpensive and non-toxic. This old fashioned cleaning product can replace a lot of chemical laden cleaners under the kitchen sink.
Vinegar is a mild acid produced form a fermentation process and consists mainly of acetic acid. Distilled vinegar is about a 5 to 8% acidic acid solution in water. Basically, things that are acidic break things down. Your stomach has strong acids that break down the foods you eat. This same acidic property in vinegar make it a great cleaner.
There are lots of ways you can put vinegar to use as a cleaning agent in combination with some other non-toxic cleaners (like baking soda). We’ll get to those in later posts. One great way to get started with vinegar is to put it in a spray bottle in a 10% vinegar, 90% water solution to use as a general cleaner. You can use this solution to clean windows. Tile and enamel surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. You’d be surprised at how nice your glasses will look after cleaning with a light spray of your general purpos vinegar solution.
Vinegar can used in most places where you were using different products. You can use it to clean the oven and microwave. You can add it to diswashing detergent. You can clean your entire refigerator with a vinegar solution. Any greasy smudge can be removed with vinegar. With all the different ways you can use vinegar for cleaning, you might think you’ll going through bottle after bottle and spending a fortune. Not true. When you are only adding about 10% vinegar to water, one bottle of distilled vinegar goes a long way. You’ll be saving money.
