Cleaning Up After Messy Pets

Owning a pet can have you spending a lot of time cleaning. Pets can be messy and make it impossible to keep your home clean. But don’t despair, we will show you a couple of simple strategies that help keep the home super clean even if your pet is messy.

When it comes to pet messes, we all know the usual suspects: hair, poop, urine and vomit. If you own a pet, you will at one point or another discover those things on your carpet, linoleum or furniture upholstery.

We love our pets. It would be great if they were a little neater, but they are not. Our pets have no way of cleaning up after themselves, so we need to do it for them.

Muddy Paws

Muddy paws are a source of cleaning irritation. This one is easy if you remember it. Simply wipe them down after a walk and before going into the house, especially on rainy days. It will save you from having to constantly deal with muddy stains. If your pet does track some mud into the house, it can be taken care of with some warm water and rags. If you do it right away, mud is easy to clean from the carpet.

Pet Hair And Shedding

For shedding pets, a vacuum cleaner, Velcro brush and some tape comes in handy. Pet hair is the easiest to deal with. Regular vacuuming and brushing with a Velcro brush will remove most if not all the hair. Vacuuming around the pet sleeping area will do wonders for keeping pet hair at bay. Also vacuum the upholstery and go over areas where you pet likes to hang out with a Velcro brush or some Scotch tape will get the stubborn hair. Making these tasks a regular part of the cleaning process will do wonders.

Pets Pooping and Getting Sick

For biological pet disasters, it is a good idea to have an action plan. Acting quickly can mean the difference between a complete restoration of the carpet and upholstery or lasting damage. You do not want to give these stains time to chemically interact with the environment, i.e., your carpet and upholstery.

The first step in cleaning these types of stains is to use water to soak and remove as much as you can, then wipe the remainder with a water and vinegar solution. You can repeat this process a few times to get the maximum cleaning effect. Do not brush hard with a stiff-bristled brush. You may damage the carpet. Use only towels, rags, or soft brushes.

For the really nasty stuff you can get pet bacteria/enzyme digesters from the pet store, They will help remove both the stains and the smell. Enzyme digesters have detailed instructions on how to use them, but in general, they will work more slowly than water and vinegar. You will probably have to leave it on the stain for quite some time while they are breaking down the bacteria and cleaning the stain.

When a pet vomits on the carpet, you need to catch it right away or the carpet may be permanently damaged. The strong acids in the digestive track will quickly damage the carpet.

Taking Care Of Your Pet

Let’s not forget about our beloved pet. Keeping our pet clean with regular brushing and washing is a great way to minimize the cleanup. Also, good food, proper training and visits to the vet will keep our pets healthy and less likely to make a mess on the carpet. You and your little loved one will be happier.
